Hirsutism, defined as the presence of excessive body hair distributed in an androgen-dependent pattern, is present in as many as 5 to 10% of women. It results from androgen excess in nearly 80% of cases, with polycystic ovary syndrome being the most frequent underlying disorder. Only rarely do hirsute women present with normal serum androgen levels and regular menstrual cycles, a condition known as idiopathic hirsutism. …
