Therapy of radiation-induced angiosarcoma of the breast in an elderly patient

Angiosarcomas are tumors with a poor prognosis and can be related to breast cancer or its subsequent therapeutic modalities and can be classified as primary and secondary angiosarcomas. Primary angiosarcoma can be found histologically in less than 2 per 1,000 breast cancer patients [1]. In contrast, secondary angiosarcomas can either result from chronic lymphoedema after axillary lymph node resection [2], or occur as a complications even years after adjuvant radiation following breast-conserving surgery [3]. Post-radiation angiosarcoma occurs more frequently in elderly women and is defined by three characteristics: location within the field of radiation, latency of years after radiation and histological distinction from the primary neoplasm [4]. …
