In 2005, in Emergency Radiology, my colleague Dr. Alex Merkulov and I published a critical assessment of the value of the newly developed radiology assistant position. This article stemmed from a point–counterpoint debate held at the 2004 annual meeting of the American Society of Emergency Radiology. The purpose of our analysis of the intent and components of this proposed job description was to challenge advocates of the radiology assistant initiative by expressing doubt that such an innovation would really represent an advance in the delivery of care through a reorganization of work responsibility in Radiology. …
