On holding the book The Physiologic Basis of Surgery, Fourth Edition, one feels the effects of an immediate and powerful surge of the yet to be described stress hormone “intimidol.” The same feeling that one gets when disrobing a brand new textbook known by its legendary original name, be it a “Maingot,” a “Blumgart,” or a “De Vita.” After all, the schoolboy in the surgeon never grows up, and the thrill and fear of going through hundreds of libido-crushing pages of basic science rekindles memories of the best and the worst times of one’s life. …
