Before being marketed a new pharmaceutical requires approval by regulatory agencies both in Europe and in the US to ensure that it is safe and effective. Animal and clinical trials are needed to test safety and effectiveness. However, postmarketing pharmacovigilance leads to a better understanding of the properties of a pharmaceutical that allows reassessment of its clinical value and a better understanding of its adverse effects and unexpected pharmacological effects. …
