This thematic issue of Anatomy and Embryology samples and summarizes recent anatomical, electrophysiological, functional imaging, and molecular imaging studies of the human brain. Earlier versions of these papers were read at the “The Second Vogt Brodmann Symposium: Convergence of Structure and Function”, held in Jülich, Germany, in April 2004. The symposium (generously sponsored by the Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Cecil and Oskar Vogt Brain Research Institute, Düsseldorf) was organized as a forum for discussions on novel findings and concepts about the mechanisms underlying human brain functions and dysfunctions thereof with particular emphasis on the structural and neurochemical basis of the human brain. This issue contains invited papers presented at the symposium. The papers were all subjected to peer-review. …
