To the Editor—We appreciate the opportunity to respond to Dr. Schubach’s letter regarding the failure of The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (SCRS) practice parameter on the management of hemorrhoids to discuss direct current treatment of hemorrhoids. There are several points worthy of discussion, including the important observation that the parameter was published in 1993 and has not been updated, thereby limiting its applicability. The Standards Committee of ASCRS has been working very hard to convert the practice parameters to a rigorous, evidence-based format, with updated parameters published at scheduled intervals to maintain current relevance. We expect the updated parameter on the treatment of hemorrhoids to be published this year. …
