Leadership to improve consistency in echocardiography data

We share the enthusiasm expressed by Marriner [1] for greater consistency in echocardiography data, as it is a commonly-requested examination in all tertiary healthcare facilities and thus, essential for high quality care. A large source of the difficulty is the variability of data acquisition, especially by less experienced operators, whether sonographers or cardiologists [2, 3]. A number of interventions – such as education programs [46] – have been attempted to improve quality. Most fundamentally, though, we have found in our experience is that a greater degree of leadership in the staff – of both sonographer and cardiologist background – improves quality. …
