Abstract

The problems of intergenerational interactions in the spheres of labor and leisure are studied in the context of the idea of a society for all ages. The results of measurement of intergenerational relations with sociological methods are presented. An attempt at measuring intergenerational relationships was made in the course of an expert survey conducted by the authors in 2016 within the framework of the project no. 16-02-00495 “Human Capital of the Senior Generation: Preservation and Use,” which was supported by the Russian Foundation for Humanities and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research. The trends in the application and transformation of mentoring phenomenon were studied, including the establishment of a mixed-age workforce. Facts proving the elderly population’s inclination towards mixed-aged, leisure communication are also revealed. The most important human qualities of the senior generation handed down to children and youth are identified.
Footnotes
1
The creation of multiage teams is another currently growing trend.

2
In the international system proposed above, its developers tried to reflect this factor through the indicators “percentage of the population that provided unpaid care services to their children and grandchildren” and “percentage of the population that provided unpaid care services to elderly adults.” At the same time, we can speak in this case of the partial “conditionally formalized” intersection of two aspects of the considered indicator system, i.e., “provision of unofficial care services” and “intergenerational transfers.”

3
The formulation of this question in our study is original and unparalleled.

4
This is in complete agreement with the results obtained, for example, by V. A. Kushtaninа [14].

5
This is what in the system above is called “intergenerational transfers (within the family).”

6
This is what in the system above is called “intergenerational dialog.”

7
In this case, the middle generation refers to persons not belonging to the family circle.

8
The same picture with regard to family transfers is also observed in economically developed countries: “A large study in Europe and North America showed that downward financial flows from parents in the second generation (or in the third generation) to children (parents in the first generation) and grandchildren are the most pronounced” [1, p. 63 with reference to 31, 32, 33], as well as [3437]. Similar conclusions have been drawn by many domestic researchers [e.g., 4–6, 9, 11, p. 65–68; 18, 23, 26, 28].

9
Demographer S. Shcherbov introduced into scientific use a characteristic approach to the concept of aging, implying by this the illegality of comparing people of the same age in different countries or in different periods of time [8].

10
It is important to recall, however, that we gave preference during the survey to experts who still remained employed.

Keynote webinar | Spotlight on medication adherence

Live: Thursday 27th June 2024, 18:00-19:30 (CEST)

WHO estimates that half of all patients worldwide are non-adherent to their prescribed medication. The consequences of poor adherence can be catastrophic, on both the individual and population level.

Join our expert panel to discover why you need to understand the drivers of non-adherence in your patients, and how you can optimize medication adherence in your clinics to drastically improve patient outcomes.
