Over the 55 years of Professor Robert Salter’s academic career, he saw different eras of academic orthopaedics, including the incorporation of implants and technologies into clinical care, outcome-based research, molecular medicine, translational research, and evidenced-based care. His concentration was what he termed “transformational research”, which fits into any of these eras. He defined transformational research as work which changed the care given to patients resulting in immense worldwide benefits. No other orthopaedic surgeon in the past several decades could equal the success of his contribution in transformational academic work. His work helped patients with deformities and diseases while inspiring future scientists and health care practitioners through his innovative approach to complex scientific questions. Dr. Robert Salter was a gifted orthopaedic surgeon whose focus centered on patient care and continuous education and research. He transformed the existing pediatric orthopaedic practice that benefited millions and will continue to benefit many generations to come.
