The rheumatological community has been greatly excited by the results of clinical trials showing that patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who receive rituximab experience improvements not only in the signs and symptoms of their disease, but also in physical function and health-related qualify of life. The fact that positive effects are observed with this B-cell targeted therapy provides the main supporting argument for a role of B cells in the pathophysiology of RA — a subject that has been debated for several decades. …
