Closure or reversal of a de-functioning loop ileostomy necessitates meticulous dissection around the stoma down to the level of the anterior abdominal wall. This requires retraction in all directions in order to liberate the bowel circumferentially, allowing for bowel anastomosis to take place and return of the loop back into the abdominal cavity. Such a procedure often demands the aid of an assistant. This is especially true in obese patients or in the presence of dense adhesions where dissection becomes difficult and visualisation is compromised, often resulting in extension of the wound. …
