Reply: We are grateful for the comments by Ercin et al. doi:10.1007/s11695-008-9585-9. Some of the obese subjects with or without NASH in our study [1] have overt diabetes. We only collected the laboratory data of fasting sugar, HbA1c, plasma insulin, and HOMA-IR in our patients. The lack of correlation between metabolic syndrome and plasma adipokine levels is one of the limitations of our study. The diagnosis of NASH should exclude medication that causes fatty change in the liver. In our study, a detailed medication history was obtained in every obese subject preoperatively. …
