Abstract

Purpose

The aim of the current study was to identify the relationship between anthropometric parameters and vertical jumping performance and to establish reference values of vertical jump parameters among Tunisian adolescent athletes in both genders.

Methods

Jump height and power were measured to establish reference values of vertical jumping parameters in Tunisian adolescent athletes aged 13–19 years in both genders. This study tested six hundred and forty-three multidisciplinary athletes (411 males and 232 females). Peak height and power reached in counter movement jump and squat jump were provided by an Optojump device. Full and stepwise regression models were used to identify which anthropometric parameters significantly contribute to performance variables.

Results

Our study showed a strong positive correlation between anthropometric variables and age. The multiple regressions showed that age, body mass, standing height, fat-free mass and leg muscle volume were the best predictors of jumping performance in athletic Tunisian adolescents in both genders.

Conclusions

This study provides prediction equations of vertical jumping parameters in Tunisian athletic adolescents based on a large cohort of adolescents aged between 13 and 19 years. These reference values can be used to detect highly talented athletes and to evaluate the possible effects of training in adolescent athletes.
