After the widespread implementation of neoadjuvant multimodal treatment of rectal cancer, a critical issue during management of these patients has become the exact time interval between neoadjuvant treatment completion and definitive surgery. By the end of the last century, a single, randomized trial suggested that 6 weeks was the ideal interval after demonstrating superior response rates compared with 2 weeks from chemoradiation.
