Recognizing the apical ballooning syndrome in the intensive care unit

Acute transient left ventricular systolic dysfunction is a not infrequent finding among critically ill individuals [1, 2]. While acute myocardial infarction or ischemia remain the most common causes, ICU patients may also experience transient left ventricular dysfunction due to subarachnoid hemorrhage, respiratory failure, sepsis, or pancreatitis [2]. Recently, the left ventricular apical ballooning syndrome (i.e. tako-tsubo cardiomyopathy) has been added to the growing list of potential etiologies [3]. …
