Professor Doctor Emil Sebastian Bücherl was Professor of Surgery and Chairman of the Department of Surgery, University Hospitals of the Free University, Berlin. He took one of the most important places of the postwar area in heart and chest surgery in Germany for his innovative, creative, and visionary character, combined with a tenacious fighting spirit. He gave most important impetus throughout the world for the surgery of temporary and permanent organ replacement in contrast to the rest of his contemporary postwar colleagues who mainly rested solidly on their US-import expertise. …
