This issue of Annals of Surgical Oncology features the proceedings of The Fifth International Meeting on Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Eastern and Western Experiences held at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, 11–13 January 2007. Although relatively uncommon in the United States, HCC is the third leading cause of cancer death worldwide and our Eastern colleagues have the largest experience with treatment of this disease. The goal of the meeting was to review the multidisciplinary treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) while maximizing the crosstalk between the West and the East. Over the past 10 years, similar meetings have taken place every other year at alternating Eastern and Western sites. The previous meetings were held in Paris, Tokyo, Milan, and Hong Kong. For the first time this important event took place in North America. …
