Since its introduction in the early 1980s,
1 the use of cardiac positron emission tomography (PET) perfusion imaging has greatly increased. Its superior sensitivity and specificity as well as the routine availability of rubidium-82 (Rb-82) have made cardiac PET an important tool in the detection and risk stratification of coronary artery disease. Likewise, there are a growing number of interpreting providers with a wide spectrum of qualifications ranging from competent to expert level. With the increasing utilization of PET, proper use may require our profession to develop mechanisms to train experienced nuclear cardiologists who have been focused almost exclusively on SPECT not cardiac PET. Therefore, a review of current PET education as well as recommendations for cardiac PET training will be discussed as part of the proceedings of the Cardiac PET Summit meeting held in Baltimore, MD May 12, 2014. …
