Thanks for the comment from Besselink et al. Their randomized trial of probiotic prophylaxis in patients with predicted severe acute pancreatitis was a respected clinical trial, although the results were opposite to expectations. The results raised several questions. In order to ascertain the effect of probiotics in severe acute pancreatitis, we did a meta-analysis and got the conclusion from the current evidences: probiotics and acute pancreatitis need a long way to go! …
