The primacy of an idea, the paternity of a discovery is not always evident. The claim is often difficult because victory has many fathers, while defeat is an orphan. As a result, intellectual property has become a valuable commodity which is protected with a jealousy reminiscent of a primal urge. In institutions of higher learning where integrity is thought to be the currency of academic exchange, the mantle of probity cannot hide the occasional lapse of ethic or dubious merit in the search for distinction. …
