Spontaneous reporting system in Italy is highly decentralised. Reporters send the paper form to their Local Health Unit (LHU). About 400 LHU are present in the whole of Italy, different in size and population and distributed in the 20 Italian Regions. In 8 of these regions Regional Pharmacovigilance Centre are present. Pharmacists of LHUs have frequent contact with the physicians in their area, mainly due to activities related to the management of drug prescriptions. Since 2002 they insert the received spontaneous reporting form, through a web-based software, directly in the National Database, coding the information on drugs, reactions and diseases. The active relationship between reporters and LHU makes easier their intervention to improve reporting and to disseminate reporting-back information. On the other hand it is more difficult the training of the operators in coding and other data management procedures. …
