Some phenomena are so intricately linked to human experience that they are the endless source of proverbs. Pain is one such phenomenon, and it is the focus of this issue of the European Spine Journal. Pain has been with us since the beginning of time and it was Poena, the Greek goddess of revenge who gave us our word “pain”. Certainly, in spine care, it is one of the main reasons why people seek treatment. In PubMed, ‘pain’ combined with ‘spine’, gives us over 35,000 references. Let us add to this body of research. Rabindranath Tagore wrote: ‘Let me not beg for the stilling of my pain, but for the heart to conquer it.’ Let us see what we can propose. …
