Achalasia is a rare idiopathic disease of esophageal motility characterized by a failure of the esophageal gastric junction (EGJ) to relax during swallowing, combined with aperistalsis of the esophageal body. The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is hypertensive in about 50 % of patients.
