Pink urine

A 38-year-old man passed cloudy pink urine (Fig. 1) 1 day after receiving a liver transplant. He had no urinary tract symptoms. Dipstick analysis was positive only for blood (1+) and protein (1+). Urine pH was 5, and urine cultures were sterile. A pink sediment settled rapidly at the bottom of the urine collection (Fig. 1) and was shown to contain numerous uric acid crystals. The colour of the urine gradually returned to normal when the patient was given intravenous lactated Ringer’s solution.
