Pharmaceutical expenditure and therapeutic value of new medicines in Spain

The Spanish pharmaceutical market is the seventh largest pharmaceutical market in the world and the fifth largest in the European Union in terms of value of consumption (drug prices multiplied by purchased quantities). During the period 1997– 2001, medicines were the fastest growing component of Spanish National Health System expenditure. In response, the Spanish government adopted several cost-containment measures to keep pharmaceutical expenditures under control. Despite the savings expected from these measures, pharmaceutical expenditures rose by an annual average of 8.28% in real terms, between 1997 and 2001.[1] …
