Persistent Cystic Duct Stump Leak Managed with Hydrocoil Embolization

Bile leak is a potential complication of liver and gallbladder surgery. More than 75% of bile duct injuries are not recognized at the time of laproscopic cholecystectomy, causing routine surgeries to have insidious complications [1]. While endoscopic decompression and stenting of the biliary system is usually successful, endoscopic management can, on occasion, fail. Several reports exist in the literature of successful embolization of biliary leaks with traditional metallic vascular coils [2, 3]. We report the novel use of HydroCoil (MicroVention, Aliso Viejo, CA), a platinum helical coil covered with a hydrogel polymer, to successfully embolize a cystic duct stump leak that occurred after laparoscopic cholecystectomy and had failed management by other interventions. …
