Abstract

A new method to enhance peripheral nerve regeneration is described. A 2-cm-long segment of right sciatic nerve of 90 Sprague-Dawley rats was transected and the gap was then bridged using one of the three methods: group 1 (treated, n 1 = 30), a 2-cm-long strip of perineurium inserted inside a 2-cm-long vein graft; group 2 (control, n 2 = 30), a vein graft alone; group 3 (standard nerve graft, n 3 = 30), a resected segment of the sciatic nerve. Clinical and electrophysiological tests and quantitative analysis carried out 12 weeks after surgical procedure showed a good nerve regeneration for the treated and the control vein group, although it was lower than the standard nerve graft group. G factor values, index of nervous myelinization, were not significantly different between groups 1 and 3 (P < 0.05), but either were significantly lower than that of group 2.
