Gastrointestinal (GI) complications are rare but often fatal consequences of cardiac surgery, especially after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) operations. The therapy can be conservative or - in critical cases - surgical; however, an early and safe diagnosis may prevent the development of life-threatening GI complications.
