A 45-year-old Caucasian woman with no significant past medical history was initially evaluated in the emergency department for complaints of several months of intermittent epigastric discomfort, followed by 3 days of melena. She denied any long-term NSAID use, nausea, vomiting, early satiety, or weight loss. Upon initial evaluation, laboratory investigations revealed microcytic anemia with hematocrit 24%, MCV 78 fL, platelets 281,000 K/uL, WBC 5.9 K/µL, and INR 1.08. Her renal function and liver function tests were normal. …
