A spectacular piece of Olmec art with a medical theme demonstrating an achondroplastic dwarf with all the classic features of stunted growth and large head (hydrocephalus?) was found. This piece was examined in 1970 by Gordon E. Ekholm in a 1970 letter on the American Museum of Natural History letterhead and he described the piece as follows. “I have seen the curious serpentine figure of a dwarf (height 16 cms) and holding torches in its two hands—property of Mr. Ardon. I have studied this piece carefully and I believe that it is authentic, although it is quite different from anything else I have seen. It is a strange...figure.” …
