https://static-content.springer.com/image/art%3A10.1007%2Fs11739-016-1571-y/MediaObjects/11739_2016_1571_Figa_HTML.jpg Giancarlo Berni (October 14, 1936–June 20, 2016) was a renowned internist, and one of the founders of emergency medicine in Italy. During his career, he practiced internal medicine mostly at the Careggi Hospital and in part at the Santa Maria Nuova Hospital in Florence. He ultimately retired in 2006. Throughout his career, Giancarlo made important contributions to the education of young students and specialists of different fields, not only related to internal and emergency medicine. He has been a member of several scientific societies, including the Federation of Italian Hospital Internists, and an initial member of the Editorial Board of Internal and Emergency Medicine since its foundation in 2006, and then subsequently of the Advisory Board. He was very popular with patients and colleagues not only in Florence, but all over Italy. Patient care was undoubtedly his first primary interest and this is one of the reasons why people loved and respected him. Until his death, he remained very active in the medical society and worked very hard for the organization of Health Care of Tuscany Region. Among the different projects, I had the opportunity to work with him until a few months ago on the Tuscany guidelines for the prevention of venous thromboembolism. …
