Excerpt

Nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) allows surgeons to preserve the entire skin envelope, including the focal point of the breast, the nipple–areola complex (NAC). This affords a postoperative appearance most similar to the native breast. Studies have shown that patients undergoing NSM have a better cosmetic outcome and psychosocial well-being than shown by their own baseline preoperative assessment or by patients who undergo skin-sparing mastectomy with nipple reconstruction.1,2
