Abstract

We describe a surgical approach to cervicothoracic neuroblastoma in children which included a cervical incision and a median sternotomy. The incision did not include a thoracotomy, but provided adequate exposure in all patients with minimal morbidity. All structures from the neck to the descending aorta all the way to the posterior mediastinum could be visualized. Three children were included, all of whom were discharged on the fifth-day post-surgery with minimal pain, no shoulder joint instability, or displacement of the clavicle. We would recommend this alternative surgical approach using a cervical partial median-sternotomy for all children with cervicothoracic neuroblastoma as it provides good disease control with optimal post-surgery outcomes.
