National Cancer Database Reports Ongoing Disruptions in Cancer Diagnoses in 2021

Year-after-year, the National Cancer Database (NCDB) has been a reliable source of cancer data, allowing researchers to consistently generate high quality cancer reports.1 However, these historically stable data models were disrupted throughout the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic with approximately 200,000 fewer newly identified cases in the NCDB in the year 2020.2 It was anticipated that these cancer cases may be captured in 2021, potentially at advanced stage disease. Our objective was to evaluate cancer case volumes, stage, and patient characteristics within the 2021 NCDB dataset before including this cohort in future research and data modeling. …
