The first thing I ever played on the piano was the pentatonic scale, in G-flat major. Like plastic buttons on a toy, I unwarily pressed each black key I could find, slipping no less than a dozen times as I trekked across the keyboard with a single finger. Though simple in construction, the pentatonic scale brims with charm and possibility.
