We share the view expressed by Drs Kwan and Friel that there is a great need for further investigation of the head/neck articulation, particularly in patients with a whiplash injury, but also in other kinds of neck disease. The facet joints and discs have been thoroughly studied, but little attention is paid to the craniovertebral joints. There are several reports of major atlanto-occipital dislocation without fracture [

3]. When the head is exposed to the strong G-forces, as in a whiplash injury, there is good reason to believe that the craniovertebral ligaments and membranes are considerably strained. …
