Meta-analyses are considered by many as the holy grail of evidence-based medicine. This invited comment shows that the methodology of performing a meta-analysis is of crucial importance for adequate interpretation of the pooled data. Despite some limitations in the different papers published, the editors believe that the meta-analyses in this issue of Hernia add important information to the current debate of using heavyweight vs. lightweight (or large pore) meshes in open and laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. …
