Mast cell sarcoma of the sternum, clonally related to an antecedent germ cell tumor with a novel D579del KIT mutation

Mastocytosis is a heterogeneous disease characterized by the accumulation of abnormal mast cells. The disease is classified as either cutaneous or systemic mastocytosis based on the site of mast cell accumulation [1]. Two forms of systemic mastocytosis are known, namely extracutaneous mastocytoma and mast cell sarcoma. Both form a localized mass in non-cutaneous organs. Mastocytomas are non-destructive and show a benign course, while mast cell sarcomas cause destructive proliferation and malignant progression. …
