Gastrointestinal extrapulmonary small cell carcinoma (GI EPSCCa) is a rare subtype of high-grade neuroendocrine cancer with increasing incidence in the US.
1 There is a paucity of data regarding the pattern of distribution, role of molecular aberrations, prognosis, and appropriate modalities of treatment in the management of this highly aggressive clinical entity. Limited available retrospective population-based studies are inconsistent on the role of surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy (RT), including corresponding survival benefits. Guidelines for therapy are largely rudimentary.
