Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP), the most common dermal sarcoma, is known to be a locally aggressive and infiltrative tumor.
1 Due to its infiltrative nature, microscopically positive margins were historically not recognized during attempts at wide local excision (WLE), leading to high rates of local recurrence. In an attempt to provide real-time margin assessment at the time of resection, Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) has been increasingly used to reduce the risk of local recurrence.
2 Although MMS has been adopted to treat patients with DFSP, it is not available at all centers, evidence on the superiority of MMS over WLE is conflicting.
