ASO Author Reflections: Mucocele-Like Lesions of the Breast—Excision or No Excision?

The clinical significance of mucocele-like lesions (MLLs) of the breast is that these lesions are rare and patients with this diagnosis are more likely to have associated atypical hyperplasia, even though there does not appear to be a significant long-term breast cancer risk associated with MLL.1 Studies investigating whether to excise MLLs are limited by the low incidence of MLLs. Estimates place MLLs at < 1% in core biopsies. In addition, the distinction between an MLL and a mucinous carcinoma may not be straightforward in a limited core biopsy. As is the case with most high-risk lesions of the breast, the management of these lesions has been the subject of debate. Our aim was to identify features that can help optimize the management of MLLs. …
