Excerpt

Peritoneal metastasis has been recognized as the most critical factor in assessing the prognosis of patients with gastric cancer, and many efforts have been made to treat this condition, with limited success.1 Even after curative resection followed by adjuvant therapy, peritoneal recurrence is frequently observed because intraabdominal micrometastasis is invisible, and therapy is resistant.2 Successful biomarkers that accurately diagnose or predict peritoneal metastasis of gastric cancer help physicians in early detection and prevention of this disease.3 To date, however, no such biomarker for peritoneal metastasis is available. In this study, a metastatic pathway-specific transcriptome analysis was performed with the aim of identifying a novel candidate molecule specifically overexpressed in gastric cancer prone to peritoneal metastasis. Because troponin I2 (TNNI2) was selected as a candidate biomarker, the predictive value of TNNI2 expression for peritoneal metastasis of gastric cancer was evaluated using surgically resected specimens.4
