Since the first description of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) for early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) was published in the early 1990s, two small randomized, controlled trials (RCT) and a number of case series studies have reported improved perioperative outcomes and similar long-term survival outcomes compared with open thoracotomy.

3 Despite these encouraging results, VATS continue to represent only a minority of procedures performed for patients with NSCLC worldwide. A number of reasons may account for the lack of popularization of the VATS technique, such as lack of experience and training in some centres, concerns about its safety profile, and uncertainty about its long-term oncologic efficacy. …
