The 2011 Heritage award recipient, Kirby I. Bland, has an extraordinary legacy of excellence in Surgical Oncology as an educator, clinical trialist, and translational researcher (Fig. 1). Dr. Bland was born in Dothan, Alabama, and attended Auburn University for his undergraduate studies. He stayed in Alabama for Medical School, graduating from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He then traveled to Gainesville, Florida, for residency training in general surgery under the mentorship and tutelage of Dr. Edward Woodward and Dr. Lester Dragstedt. During that time, Dr. Bland completed a research fellowship in immunology before heading to Houston for his fellowship in Surgical Oncology under the strong mentorship of Dr. Richard Martin at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
