The Regional Management of Breast Cancer session at the American Society of Breast Surgeons meeting presented data on four controversial topics that were highly relevant to the current management of patients with breast cancer. Advances in sentinel lymph node (SLN) histopathologic assessment and intraoperative molecular assessment of SLNs were reviewed by Aysegul Sahin, M.D. (University of Texas—M.D. Anderson Cancer Center) and Sheldon Feldman, M.D. (Columbia University). Predictive models to estimate the risk of non-SLN involvement were presented by Kimberly Van Zee, M.D. (Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center). Finally, the data presented by Armando Giuliano, M.D. (John Wayne Cancer Institute) added to the continuing debate regarding the clinical relevance of small volume metastases. In this paper, we have summarized the highlights from this session. …
