Does hypodontia of primary canines result in delayed dental development?

We read the commentary by Kjaer and Duagaard Jensen on the case report by Anthonappa and King titled “Hypodontia of all primary canines” published in the December 2016 issue of European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry. Anthonappa and King (2016) reported a case of a 4 year old Chinese girl missing all primary canines. They claimed this was the first ever case exhibiting hypodontia of all primary canines. In the latter part of their report, they discussed the theories associated with hypodontia. Contrary to the findings reported in their paper, Kjaer and Daugaard-Jensen (2017) argued that this might be a case of delayed maturation of primary canines and not agenesis. They also suggested that a possible relationship might exist between delayed development of primary canines and agenesis of permanent canines. …
