Abstract

Purpose

This technical note aims to present a cost-effective alternative for creating dental acrylic resin surgical templates and cutting guides, as opposed to the more expensive 3D-printed templates commonly used in the reconstruction of mandibular defects with free fibula flaps. The primary objective is to achieve precise positioning and angulation of osteotomized segments during the restoration of mandibular defects.

Methods

The outlined technique utilizes acrylic resin surgical templates, offering an economically viable solution while maintaining accuracy. The process involves meticulous shaping and placement of the fibula bone to enhance facial symmetry and improve functionality. This approach is intended to significantly reduce both operative time and financial expenditure compared to the use of 3D-printed templates.

Results

The results of implementing this method demonstrate its practicality and cost-effectiveness. The acrylic resin surgical templates enable accurate shaping and positioning of the fibular bone, contributing to improved facial symmetry and functionality. Notably, the technique has proven successful in reducing both operative time and associated costs.

Conclusions

While acknowledging the potential of this alternative method, it is essential to emphasize its case-specific applicability, with the surgeon’s clinical judgment being a determining factor. Strict adherence to proper sterilization protocols is crucial to ensure patient safety. In conclusion, this technical note proposes an intriguing alternative for crafting surgical templates tailored to mandibular abnormalities, striking a pragmatic balance between cost-effectiveness and efficacy in reconstructive procedures.
