Choosing wisely and preoperative hemoglobin A1c testing: what should it mean?

In September 2015, the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society (CAS), through Choosing Wisely Canada™ (CWC), released five evidence-based recommendations regarding preoperative testing.1 In the “more is not always better” spirit of the CWC movement, the recommendations promote high-value care and improved use of health system resources. Accordingly, it is recommended that routine preoperative testing be avoided in specific surgical populations where testing is either of no benefit or any benefits of testing are outweighed by harm. Such harm may include complications from unnecessary delays in surgery or invasive follow-up testing for false-positive results. …
