Background
The purpose of this work was to examine if there is any correlation between the measurements of articular eminence inclination, namely sagittal condylar inclination with the different classification of dental classes.
Materials and methods
A total of 43 individuals were analyzed with computerized condylography to find the eminence inclination and also by cephalometric studies and casts mounted on an articulator on reference position in order to find if there is a correlation between the inclination of the eminence and the different classification cases of class I, class II division1, class II division 2 and class III. The divisions of class II are based only on dentoalveolar criteria.
Results
The 43 subjects were evaluated individually for each joint and the mean values of sagittal condylar inclination angles of the right and left sides, respectively were determined: class I 48.97 (24 cases) and 53.43° (19 cases), class II division 1 45.78° (8 cases) and 47.73 (10 cases), class II division 2 60.28° (5 cases) and 57.46° (8 cases) and class III 46.77° (6 cases) and 49.73° (6 cases). Statistical t-test results showed that class II division 2 was significantly higher than all cases on the right side on the sample and significantly higher than class II division 1 on the left side.
Conclusions
The results indicated that dental class II division 2 subjects tend to have higher values of sagittal condylar inclination than other class classification cases. The study also showed a tendency in increasing sequence of class II division 1 followed by class III, class I and the upper value class II division 2. It is important to identify eminences with high angles of inclination which are frequently related to a high tendency to temporomandibular dysfunction and also should also be taken in account for the diagnostics and treatment plan.
